Vous choisissez le Fitz Roy pour une raison simple : ici, tout se joue à pied, en quelques minutes nettes. L’adresse, Place de l’Eglise, tient vraiment le centre de Val Thorens. L’église de la station est à 49 mètres. La Maison des guides et de la montagne est à 73 mètres. Ce détail change le séjour. Le matin, vous partez vite vers les pistes, les sentiers ou un guide UIAGM, sans traverser toute la station. Le nom de l’hôtel raconte aussi autre chose qu’un simple décor alpin. Il renvoie au cerro Fitz Roy, sommet de Patagonie culminant à 3 405 mètres. Ce n’est pas un hasard anodin. Il y a là une idée de montagne franche, presque technique, que les amateurs lisent tout de suite. Le clin d’œil vaut d’autant plus qu’en 1952, Lionel Terray et Guido Magnone ont signé la première ascension du sommet. Sur place, retenez surtout Beca.
