The In-House Experience
In Malia, the architectural experience is read on the scale of a territory inhabited since the Minoan age. The Minoan palace of Malia exemplifies this.
Built around 1900 BC, it covered 7,500 square metres. This vastness places the site among the grand palatial complexes of Minoan Crete.
Its history also bears the marks of disruptions. The palace was first destroyed around 1700 BC, and then again around 1450 BC. This succession of constructions and destructions illuminates an architecture designed to endure, then reinterpreted, transformed, and reorganised.
Since 1915, excavations have uncovered major structures and numerous artefacts. They allow us to understand the organisation of a palace where space was never neutral. Each threshold, each courtyard, each circulation contributed to a precise order.
Staying in Malia thus brings one closer to an ancient idea of Mediterranean habitation. An architecture of composition, hierarchy, and rhythm. Here, stone tells less of decoration than of a way of inhabiting the world, between power, use, and memory.
